02 / Professional checks
Registration, relevant specialist qualifications and experience with a proposed treatment are separate details to establish.
The General Medical Council provides a public register for checking a doctor’s registration, licence to practise and recorded specialist fields. Look for the specialty relevant to the proposed operation, and ask the surgeon to explain their training and experience in that procedure. Professional association membership and hospital marketing should be considered separately from the regulator’s record. Arrange a consultation with the clinician who would operate and request a written plan covering the procedure, anaesthesia, hospital, aftercare and total quoted cost. Ask who manages complications and revision care, including outside normal hours. If travelling within the UK, identify the actual hospital and follow-up location before booking accommodation.
Check the individual doctor’s registration, licence to practise and relevant Specialist Register entry.
